Reed sensors in Accurate level sensing of fluids

In ships and yachts, it is not only necessary to monitor the exact volume of fuel, but also the volume of the sewage and the drinking water tanks. These gauges work on the same principle as a fuel gauge and require a potentiometric feedback from within the tanks.
Reed Sensors need to be combined with resistors, on PCBs that re designed to generate this sort of output. More information about the design of such PCB circuits is available here.
As on boats and ships, there is a space restriction, tanks are usually design to fit these small spaces and are long and wide but very short in height. This mean that the design of the PCB would need to be very compact, with reed switches mounted very close to each other. Specially designed reed sensors with a high differential need to be used and are combined with integrated resistors. These PCBs to give out a potentiometric feed back across two outputs as a foamed magnetic float moves along its height. The PCB tracks can be designed in such a way that a full tank gives high resistance and an empty tank gives low resistance, or vice versa. For sensing fluids such as sewage, a perforated housing can be fitted outside the float assembly so that semi solids do not come near the float and obstruct its path.
