Dish Washer spray arm jam detection with Reed Sensors

Dish Water spray arms

The spray arms of a dish washer move axially in order to clean dishes and cutery by utilizing high pressure hot water and detergent. This process involves the systematic movement of the spray arms beneath the shelves and at the appliance’s base. However, the forceful water spray may inadvertently displace lightweight dishes in the racks, leading to potential obstructions that could impede the spray arm’s rotation and movement.

To address this issue, it is imperative to promptly detect and address any blockages to prevent disruption of the dish washing cycle.

One effective method involves the deployment of Reed Sensors strategically positioned at the endpoints and along the trajectory of the spray arms.

Equipped with a magnet, the spray arm triggers these reed sensors sequentially within a specified time frame that correlates with its rotational speed. In instances where a jam obstructs the movement, causing the elapsed time between successive reed sensor activations to exceed the predetermined threshold, the dishwasher’s processor stops the wash cycle and prompts a notification on the control panel to alert the user.

Furthermore, Reed Sensors play a pivotal role in door sensing functionalities within dishwashers. This function ensures that the dishwasher’s door is securely closed before commencement of a cleaning cycle to prevent potential water leakage. The sensor signal also serves as a safeguard mechanism by halting the wash cycle if the door is unexpectedly opened. In modern iterations of dishwashers, particularly those integrated with internet connectivity, anomalies such as jammed spray arms or open doors can be remotely communicated to users via notifications on their mobile devices.
