A Magnetic Shield or a Shunt, is a piece of metal of high magnetic permeability, that can be used to protect magnetic circuits from the effects of external magnetic fields. It can also be used to break the interaction between a reed switch and a magnet of fixed distance, by acting as a vane. Magnetic shields are also used to protect Reed Relays from stray magnetic fields.
