Potting and Encapsulation

When potting or encapsulating reed switch assemblies in custom housings, selection of materials are important. The specification of epoxy or other sealant should be checked for hardness, and coefficient of expansion. As some potting compounds cure over 24 hours, the glass seals should be protected with a resilient, shock absorbing compound like a silicone compound. Some flexible heat shrink tubes may also be used to protect the glass and the seals, prior to potting. When using two component potting compounds, it is important that smaller lots be mixed, and dispensed within a span of 7-10 minutes.
