Improving Reed Switch Performance in Harsh Environments

reed switch use in harsh environments

Reed switches and Reed Sensors used in harsh environments need some extra added protection. Harsh environments may be classified as those with high humidity, chemical vapors, extremes of temperature or high shock and vibration. These adversely affects the hermetically sealed reed switch leads and the hermetic seal integrity. Water vapor and high humidity corrodes, chemicals are dangerous, extremes of temperature may cause cracks in the hermetic glass to metal seals and shock and vibration could shift actuation distances.

Application segments that are classified as harsh include industrial processing plants, oil and gas facilities, automotive systems, marine applications, and outdoor installations—each presenting unique stressors. High-vibration areas like engines, heavy machinery, or rail systems, have continuous mechanical stress. Environments involving repeated shocks include off-road vehicles or aerospace equipment combined with extreme heat or freezing conditions, and all these factors can compromise the magnetic sensitivity and mechanical stability of conventional reed switches.

To counter these harsh threats, reed switches should be protected with specially engineered materials and rugged construction techniques. Durable outer casings made from stainless steel, Teflon, or glass-filled nylon provide robust shielding against abrasion, corrosive chemicals, and moisture ingress. High-quality sealants or encapsulating agents that help isolate the internals of the reed switches from environmental hazards. Reinforced cables with heat-resistant insulation and strain-relief boots are employed to maintain connectivity under high tension, abrasion, or temperature extremes. This allows the Reed switch to operate reliably across a wide range of conditions.

Our Magnet Sensors and Reed Sensors can be manufactured with enhanced reed switches to meet such specific application demands. Even when subjected to harsh environments, our specially made to order Sensors are engineered with high precision to ensure consistent operation in harsh environments. Contact us for more info!
