Valve Position Sensing Using Reed Sensors

Valve position sensing

In industries such as water purification, gas, and chemicals, precise control over the cleaning and filtering processes is critical. These processes involve the use of multiple valves, filtration vessels, and solenoids. A console panel monitors the volume of fluid being treated and displays other essential information, such as valve position. Dual port valves, which can be opened from 0-100%, must be accurately tracked by the system to ensure the correct ratio of inlet fluid and mixture. This is particularly important for injecting

chemicals or topping up the system with fresh water. Traditional methods of tracking valve positions can be cumbersome and prone to inaccuracies, leading to potential errors in the treatment process.

The integration of reed sensors into these systems significantly enhances their accuracy and reliability. Reed sensors, known for their sensitivity to magnetic fields, provide a precise method for tracking the number of turns made by the valve wheel. By counting these turns, the system can determine the exact position of the valve, ensuring that the same settings can be replicated consistently. This real-time monitoring is crucial for maintaining the correct fluid ratios and ensuring the efficiency and safety of the industrial processes.

A multipole magnet is attached to the wheel of the dual port valve. As the valve wheel is turned, the magnet actuates the reed sensor which is mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB) and encapsulated within the valve body. The reed sensor counts the number of turns made by the valve wheel, and this data is then translated into a percentage of the valve’s opening. This information is continuously updated and displayed on the console panel, allowing operators to monitor and adjust the valve positions with high precision.

The use of reed sensors in valve position sensing applications offers a robust solution for industries that require precise control over fluid ratios. By providing accurate, real-time data on valve positions, these sensors help maintain the efficiency and reliability of water purification, gas, and chemical processes. The integration of reed sensor technology ensures that the correct settings can be consistently applied, reducing the risk of errors and enhancing the overall performance of industrial systems.
