Mistakes to Avoid When Ordering Reed Switches or Reed Sensors
Ordering reed switches, reed sensors or magnet sensors might seem straightforward, but certain nuances can lead to performance issues if not handled correctly. Here are some common pitfalls and mistakes and how to avoid them.
1. Misunderstanding Ampere-Turn (AT) Across Manufacturers
Manufacturers use different test coils to measure AT values, so a 10-15 AT from one supplier may behave differently with another. AT values are also measured with uncut leads, so lead length and formation (such as PCB mounting, SMD, or soldered cables) further impact final actuation distances. Request trials for your desired on/off range based on your specific lead configuration and magnet strength. Consider buying magnets directly from the manufacturer to ensure compatibility.
2. Switching Suppliers Without Sending Samples
When switching suppliers, assuming product specifications such as AT band will not match your current specifications and can be risky as different manufacturers use different test coils. Send samples of your existing products so the new supplier can assess the specifications and adjust for differences in test coils, environmental requirements and lead lengths.
3. Overlooking Storage and Operating Conditions
Temperature variations affect reed switch actuation: lower temperatures increase activation distances, while higher temperatures decrease them. Humidity can also degrade the tin plating on leads if stored for more than six months. Store switches in dry, humidity controlled environments and consider your operating temperature range before ordering.
4. Choosing the Wrong Size or Wattage
Size and wattage are interdependent—larger reed switches can switch higher loads, but using the wrong size can lead to product failure. Consult with your manufacturer to select the right size based on your specific load requirements.
By addressing these potential pitfalls and mistakes, you’ll ensure smooth operation, long-term reliability, and avoid costly delays. Make sure to communicate clearly with your manufacturer to get products that meet your exact needs.
