Feeders of Wire or Strips use Ferro-magnetic Sensors

Ferro-magnetic sensors in Strip or wire feeders

In industrial pressing processes, wire and strip feeders play a vital role in delivering material to the press at the correct rate. The feed rate must be precisely matched to the speed of the pressing machine to prevent damage to the press tool or material. To achieve this, many systems incorporate a catenary loop—a controlled slack of material between the feeder and the press. This loop acts as a buffer to ensure smooth material flow, but its effectiveness relies on real-time feedback to adjust the feeder’s speed dynamically.

Ferro-magnetic sensors are an ideal solution for monitoring the catenary loop and controlling the feed rate on feeders, provided the raw materials are ferro-magnetic in nature. Two sensors are strategically placed at the upper and lower limits of the loop. These sensors detect the presence of the ferro-magnetic wire or strip and provide feedback to the feeder system. This feedback mechanism prevents excessive tension or slack in the material, safeguarding the pressing process and improving system efficiency.

When the lower ferro-magnetic sensor detects the wire or strip, it signals the feeder to slow down, reducing the feed rate. If the upper sensor detects the wire, it triggers the feeder to speed up, maintaining synchronization with the press. This real-time adjustment keeps the material flow consistent, preventing tool damage and ensuring high-quality output. Ferro-magnetic sensors excel in this application due to their ability to operate reliably in harsh environments with metal debris and vibrations. By using ferro-magnetic sensors, wire and strip feeders achieve optimal performance, protecting the press tools and materials while enhancing the precision and efficiency of the entire pressing process.
