Distilled Water Level Monitoring in Batteries Using Reed Switches

In the solar power industry, traditional lead-acid batteries that require distilled water are highly regarded for their longevity and performance. These batteries, when properly maintained, can last 7-8 years, significantly outlasting gel or AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, which typically last 3-5 years. Their ability to handle deep discharge cycles and high charge rates makes them ideal for off-grid solar installations where reliability is essential. However, maintaining these batteries requires careful monitoring of distilled water levels to prevent damage and maintain performance.
Despite their advantages, traditional batteries have a critical maintenance requirement: regular monitoring and topping up of distilled water. If the water level drops too low, the battery plates can become exposed to air, leading to sulfation, reduced capacity, and eventual failure. This poses a risk for users who may overlook or delay this maintenance step. Reed switches provide an effective solution to this issue by enabling precise monitoring of the water level within the battery. These batteries continue to perform exceptionally well in demanding applications when manufactured or combined with such level monitoring systems.
Reed switch-based float switches are a cost-effective and reliable way to ensure proper maintenance of traditional batteries. A small magnet embedded in a float moves up or down with the water level. When the water level drops below the minimum threshold, the float lowers, bringing the magnet closer to the reed switch. This action completes an electrical circuit, which can be used to light up an LED or even trigger a network connected controller that can send push notification to the Service Personnel’s phone. Needless to say, Reed Switches are hermetically sealed and are very safe to use in such applications.
