Reed switches and Reed Sensors in Barcode Scanners

by webmaster

Barcode scanners in supermarkets can be clicked on to a docking system that is integrated with the check-out conveyor belt. This helps in automatic scanning and belt indexing. Once an item is scanned, the belt is indexed, until another item appears under the scanner.

During this automated scanning, some items may not be at the same level as the barcode scanner’s field of view and the scanner will need to be removed from the dock for manual scanning. When this is done, the controller will not index

the belt, and will start indexing only after the scanner has been put back in its cradle or dock.

A reed switch on the dock and a magnet inside the scanner are used and whenever the scanner is removed from the dock to conduct a manual scan, the signal from the reed switch is used to ensure that the belt does not index. The information regarding which items require a manual scan is saved and used for further improvement of the check-out system.
