Float Switches in Portable Air Conditioners

Air Conditioners remove heat and moisture from an occupied space thereby improving the comfort of the occupants. The air conditioning of a room is usually planned during construction of the space, so that the drain pipes and other gas pipes in the case of split air conditioners are laid into the walls before plastering is done, for aesthetic reasons. For people who have not planned for air conditioning in a space, portable units are available, and these are easily transported wherever required.

Regular air conditioners cool an area by first removing the humidity in the room and ejecting it the water via the drain pipe. Portable ACs also need to do this, but the water needs to be filled into a tank as it cannot be expelled from the system. When the water in the tank get filled up, it needs to be evacuated manually. This is where reed switches help sense the level of water in the tank. Reed Switch based float switches are fitted in these tanks to trigger an audio-visual alarm to the occupants of the room asking them to drain the tank without which further cooling will not be possible.
