Reed Sensors to Prevent Thievery in Cargo Containers

Cargo theft is an international problem and hundreds of millions of dollars of goods are lost due to pilferage and theft of containers. Containers remain in open areas for several weeks or months sometimes, due to shipping and logistical delays and this presents perfect opportunities for crooks. Thievery of cargo containers happen even when goods are in transit either stealthily or sometimes even by bolder means. As a result logistical providers and insurance firms add GPS tracking to all containers that they move but this too is sometimes being thwarted by more tech-savvy thieves who dismantle such units. Reed Sensors added to the GPS units serve as a theft proof device by installing a magnet inside the container. If the GPS unit is removed forcibly, the reed sensor trigger an alarm and alerts the authorities. As always stated, reed sensors are very suitable for battery operated applications such as these as they do not drain power when not in operation. Reed switch based Ferro-magnetic detection sensors are also readily available for use in such applications and these can even detect the doors of containers when fabricated out of ferro-magnetic material
